August 24th was a memorable day. The 19th Police District's Annual Bookbag Giveaway did not disappoint!
Early morning brought a frenzy of activity. Volunteers feverishly prepared the 19th Precinct for the event. Students and their parents lined the sidewalk, eagerly awaiting the festivities as officers, PDAC members and vendors busied themselves setting up food tables, firing up grills, laying out bookbags and organizing items for sale and display.

Inside, a steady stream of young faces patiently waited their turn as Mike Monroe, owner of ESPM Hair Zone, gave students a shot of self-esteem and a great start to the school year with the latest stylish cuts. "We love giving back to the community. Personal grooming is necessary for kids to have a productive time in school" stated Mr. Monroe.
The barber's chair was never empty. Ms. Sylvia Tompkins, grandmother of two, was grateful for today's events. "It's good that police are involved with the community, the kids like to mingle with officers".
The day was highlighted with laughter and punctuated with dancing and games. Spirited, and at times comical dance-offs were DJ’d and refereed by Community Relations Officer Shakira Ayers.
More than 200 bookbags and supplies were given away, countless haircuts were provided, and gaming entertainment was delivered by The Player's Club Entertainment company. It was another successful event for the 19th District community.
