Friday, April 7th, the 19th District was a buzz of activity hours before the doors opened to the public. Sixteen youths eagerly unboxed their wares, products, food and more for sale.
As I scoured the room, the smiles, joy and yes some nerves were on full display. But what was most unescapable was the sense of pride these young entrepreneurs embodied. Historically, education has mainly taught young people to learn, an/or develop a skill and go to work for someone else. Who knows, maybe it's 'Shank Tank®️', but entrepreneurship is definitely on the rise!
19th PDAC President Dennis Lee supporting young entrepreneurs
The 19th Police District's first ever "Youth Pop Up Shop" was conceived by Community Relations Officer Shakira Ayers. Officer Ayers, wanted to give young people a "safe environment" to sell their products and feel supported. Officer Ayers also solicited business owners from the community to offer guidance and words of encouragement.
Jay Austin, co-owner of Austin Fine Photography www.AustinFinePhotography.com and member of the 19th P.D.A.C., and Casey of M Casey Designs www.mcaseydesigns.com answered Officer Ayers' call without hesitation. Mr. Austin began by telling them how very proud he was of each one of them and encouraged them to "always be selling", to keep learning and to never give up! Ms. Casey she told them that, "I live by is No matter how hard or scary your goals are just do it scared, the feeling you get after completing it will be worth it".
After receiving words of encouragement and business tips from Mr. Austin and Ms. Monique Casey of M Casey Designs, it was time for each entrepreneur to come to the front of the room. Ranging in age from 7 to 16, one by one, these young people stood in front of their peers, family, officers, etc. and introduced themselves and their respective businesses.
The Youth Pop Up Shop was heavily supported by member of the 19th P.D.A.C., Captain Lawrence Nuble, 19th District Police Officers, Firefighters from Engine 41, and the community at large. This event was a rousing success and even covered by ABC News (see full video below).
