19th District Monthly Captain's Meeting (Sept. 2023)

lyneceaustin

It was a packed house at the 19th Police District Captain's Meeting.

Residents, community members/leaders, officers, and special guests Senator Vincent Hughes, Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr.'s Office, and State Rep. Morgan Cephas's Office gathered to address a myriad of issues ranging from education, fair housing, increased funding for prosecutors and police, gun laws and more.

Captain Nuble greeted all in attendance, opened the meeting with a moment of silence in honor of "911" and introduced the first guest speaker Senator Vincent Hughes.

Senator Vincent Hughes and Ms. Remar

The Senator's first order of business was to acknowledge the passing of community warrior, Lee Tolbert. His name garnered acknowledgment and applause from the audience. Senator Hughes's main topic of conversation was education. Senator Hughes noted that the predicament the city is in (violence, crime) is a direct result of a "lack of education". He also announced the resolution of a ten-year legal battle concerning education. This decision culminated in a 784-page decision acknowledging current funding is "unconstitutional and inadequate". The new resources allotted will provide for the following:

⦁ air-conditioned classrooms

⦁ full staffing in our schools

⦁ Removal of lead and asbestos

Senator Hughes also noted the disparity between funding our suburban counterparts, Lower Merion H.S. and Overbrook H.S. Only 3.5 miles and 10 minutes away, Lower Merion H.S. receives $10,000 more per student. An attorney for the Senate Republican Caucus, on the open floor made the following statement, "Why do students on the hamburger flipping track, be allowed to learn algebra?" This is the type of irrational resistance that our elected officials are up against.

All three elected officials and or their offices fielded questions from a packed attentive audience.

Captain Nuble ended the meeting with crime statistics and closing remarks.
